Change starts at home.

Quotes, messages of support, black squares are flooding the internet right now in solidarity for a movement for change.  We are here to understand what and why this is happening in our country and why it has been allowed to happen for so long.  My feeds are flooded with quotes and statuses – this stood out, “I keep trying to find the right words to articulate all my emotions & nothing feels right. Here’s a couple I did find this weekend which sort of condenses the millions of words and thoughts floating around my brain in a positive way.  #begoodtopeople”

Change starts at home and the most important thing is to talk about it to our littles. As a brown woman, I come from a melting pot where color was around me and color is and will always be beautiful, it is what made my upbringing special. I want to make sure that my littles understand that we are all important in this world. While we all have different backgrounds and ways of processing and learning, it is up to us as parents to have these open and honest dialogues with our kids. We have the opportunity to help shape the rhetoric for the future that has for so long haunted our history, especially with Black Lives Matter.

Here are some links and recommendations from some of the comments and posts about racial injustice, racism and white privilege that we’ve seen over the last few days. This is just the beginning. Let’s guide our future generations to lead with courage, to speak up, find the strength to do what is right and above all, have love for everyone.

Caring for Kidz

We have launched the Caring for Kidz (#caringforkidz) campaign in an effort to keep our littles protected during these times.  We know it may be difficult to explain why we are on a long break without being able to see friends, the next explanation is why face masks.  We want to ensure that every Tahoe Kid is covered. While we are lucky we live in a place with many outdoor options there may be a time when you need to take your little to the grocery store.  Even better let’s say KidZone museum re-opens and they require face masks (hypothetically speaking).  Sadly, this is our new reality so we want to find a way to make it comfortable and just part of our new routine.  Here is a great video about talking to your littles about face masks.

We teamed up with local mama Janie Miller. When the pandemic started, she quickly realized she could use her sewing skills to create face masks. She has now made over 300 face masks for the essential workers at Renown in Reno. She started selling adult face masks in her Etsy shop to help cover the costs of the face masks for our essential workers. She is passionate and wants to make sure our Tahoe Kidz are covered and so are we. If the demand is there, Janie will continue to push through and we appreciate her kindness, compassion and thoughtfulness in providing these for the kids in our community.

Kidz masks are fun patterns that kids will enjoy wearing. Boy/girl patterns and three sizes to start: toddler (2-4), little kids (5-7), and big kids (8+). Each mask is made of double layer cotton, pellon interfacing with elastic to go over your ears. They are breathable, reversible, washable and reusable! You can make a $13 donation below, for every 2 masks purchased one will be donated to a child in need here in our community, proceeds (after costs such as merchant fees & shipping) will go to the continued work of giving back to the essential workers as well as Tahoe Kidz relief of choice for the month. Submit your information below and donate via paypal (below) or venmo to @TahoeKidz.

[simple-payment id=”2713″]

We hope Caring for Kidz is just the start of giving back to our local Kidz! If you receive a mask please post a picture of your little ones wearing it and make sure to hashtag #caringforkidz. Thank you for your support!

If your child is in need of a face mask or you know someone that needs one for their child please send us a message with name, address, age of their child to kidztahoe@gmail.com.  We will start our list, as soon as masks start getting donated we will distribute them depending on availability.

Truckee + Tahoe Strong Fundraiser

5/1: Update we are in the works to announce our next partner for the month of May, you can still purchase the decals through our SHOP tab!

Written by: Christina Spain Temple

Tahoe Kidz is proud to announce a fundraising effort to benefit our friends at Sierra Community House! In these strange and trying times, it is difficult to feel our typical strong sense of community that is so engrained in the Tahoe Truckee area, especially when we are sequestered at home. However even at home, we are still together in this fight to sustain our region! We have been purchasing gift cards from local businesses, purchasing take out from local restaurants, and donating food to local food banks. Together, we are STRONG.

Sierra Community House is supporting the most vulnerable in our community now more than ever. It will take time for the Tahoe/Truckee region to rebound from this blow and not everyone will recover quickly. We reached out to Sierra Community House with our idea to help support their efforts and they loved it!

We love the Tahoe Strong message. It really resonates with our work as well as our story of four organizations becoming one and as one being able to scale to meet the demands of our community during this crisis. As four separate[sic] orgs we would be in a really different place but as one we are strong.

Dawn Harris, Event Coordinator at Sierra Community House

With your $8 purchase of either a Truckee Strong or Tahoe Strong decal, 100% of the proceeds (approximately $5 after costs) will go to Sierra Community House! The decals are made of high quality adhesive vinyl and made for indoor/outdoor use. They measure approximately 4.5 inches by 2.5 inches. Perfect for your car, travel mug, boat, paddle board, yakima box, WHATEVER, decals can be ordered below!

*Supplies will be limited for the first week (through April 24th) as we wait for more material shipments to arrive, please give us 3-5 days for processing.

If for some reason you are unable to purchase please send an email to kidztahoe@gmail.com or message us on Instagram or Facebook and we can help you. Also, our Venmo is @TahoeKidz, you can place your order there as well. Thank you for your support!

Donner Trail Elementary: Donner Trail is located near the top of the Donner Summit nestled next to the Yuba River. The area provides a rich natural environment for students to explore and learn.

Donner Trail serves as both a community school to the local community as well as a multi-age magnet school for the Tahoe Truckee School Unified District. As best described by Donner Trail parents, the loving support staff and supportive teachers create a community where students are treated with respect and are taught how to be responsible, respectful to others, and how to be leaders. The Donner Trail way is to learn and assist others.  It breaks down the walls of age, bullying, and separation. Students learn who they are and who they want to become.

Donner Trail is a three-room school house that 62-75 students occupy for 180 days of the year. The “Bear Lair” houses grades K-1, “The Hive” houses grades 2-3 students, and the “Yuba Colony” houses grades 4-5.  Along with intensive focus on core subject areas, students also participate in many activities such as PE, music, and art. Because of the multi-age classrooms, students learning goals and expectations are differentiated to accommodate their learning styles and developmental levels so that all students are successful learners.

Tahoe Truckee Waldorf School (Golden Valley): The Golden Valley Tahoe School’s grass roots beginnings mirror the hard work and determination of the pioneers of the first Golden Valley Charter School eighteen years ago. It was just a few years ago when Bonnie River, founder and principal, and a small group of preschool parents had a vision to create a public Waldorf school to provide families from all socioeconomic backgrounds access to an education previously available only at expensive private schools. They named this education group the Tahoe Truckee Waldorf Learning Group and had a dream for it to one day become a tuition-free public Waldorf school in the Truckee area. In January of 2018, Golden Valley Charter Schools was invited to write and manage the Tahoe Truckee Waldorf Group charter with the plan to open a Transitional Kindergarten through Second Grade Tuition-Free Public Waldorf School in September of 2018. The school will grow to be a TK-8th grade. The new name of the school is Golden Valley Tahoe School.

The school is excited to announce that they have acquired a beautiful, permanent new campus on 40 acres in Truckee! The new site will allow for a dramatic increase in enrollment so as to provide tuition-free Waldorf education to even more students in the Truckee/Tahoe area! This space is inspiring us deeply as we wander between rooms, imagining what it will be like once it’s brimming with art, music, song, laughter, warmth and love.
